Oquaga Spirit Speaks: Poetry from Oquaga Lake

Oquaga Spirit Speaks: Poetry from Oquaga Lake. Eighty poems fashion this book. I got the idea for the title from the book, Black Elk SpeaksBlack Elk Speaks is a 1932 book by John G. Neihardt, an American poet and writer, who relates the story of Black Elk, an Oglala Lakota medicine man. Black Elk spoke in Lakota and Black Elk’s son, Ben Black Elk, who was present during the talks, translated his father’s words into English.[1] Neihardt made notes during these talks which he later used as the basis for his book.[2]

The Oquaga Spirit Speaks to all, adults and children.
Children later return as adults! This celebration of music, a floating hymn of praise, will stay with all the tots into their adult days.

The spirit was a female from the Lennie Lenape tribe. They are part of the Algonquin Indian nation. Many around the lake sense this spirit. By its tutoring, children learned how important it was to have a healthy respect for nature. They lit campfires at night. They listened to the sound of wolves in the distance. My own life has been totally changed by the wisdom of this spirit. It is now my mission to tour and recite her poetry. I have memorized all 80 poems. They are practiced daily. Adults, children- all love her rhyme. Here is a sample to read.  It is entitled: One Red Leaf. If you would like to see me recite some of the poetry, click on the link below. I have since added picture slides.

One red leaf
Dangles from a tree
Like a little red lantern
With a message for me.
One red leaf
Among thousand of green.
What is its import?
What can it mean?
A single red light
Will glow in the night,
Colorfully lighting the way.
Like a light from a far
Wherever you are;
As long as you remember to pray.
