Sexagesimal Mathematics Fuses Yin and Yang by Number. Civilization supposedly began in the 3rd millennium B.C. with the Sumerians. What is not known is this: Their math is an extension of numbers 5 and 6. Five is yin. Six is yang. John Michell, in City of Revelation, page 73- talks about the history of the rose and lily. The 5 petalled rose symbolizes yin. The 6 petalled lily symbolizes yang. This belief held firm through the Middle Ages.
How We Arrive At the Sexagesimal or the 60
Here’s the Neolitic Age equation as a proportion: 5 /6 = 10 / 12. Cross multiply and 60 = 60. The 10 and 12 of the second fraction are twice the value of the 5 and 6 of the first. They also are in the 2 to 1 octave ratio. A theme of my blogs on DSOworks, com has been: Music partook of the same numbers as measure. Key numbers were found in terms of vibrations per second of the ancient diatonic scale. They duplicated the varied units of measurement numbers of various ancient cultures. This goes back to prehistory. Music was all important. That’s why Biblical David was a musician first and the ruler second.
In Babylonia Sexagesimal was the First Large Unit
Practically speaking, 60 has more divisors than 100. Babylonians called this number “the Great One.” It became the number connected with “Anu”- god of heaven.
Here are a few examples of how 5 and 6 were fused in units of measure and yin and yang:
- The unit of measure across much of the the landscape of antiquity was the megalitic yard. One MY = (5 x 6) ÷ (5 + 6) = 2.727272…feet. Taken as 2.72.
- The hunab in Central American pyramids equals 3.41 feet. (6 x 6 x 6) + (5 + 5 + 5) = 3.41 used in terms of feet.
- The royal Egyptian cubit works with the musical octave of 6 and 5 (12 and 10). Its equivalent is in feet. Thus, (12 x 12 x 12) ÷ (10 x 10 x 10) = 1.728 feet
- Israel uses the same plan as the featured picture in a slightly different manner. The symbol of Israel is a hexagon. Hebrew letters actually doubled as numbers. The numerical equivalent of Israel in Hebrew ( Original Word: יִשְׂרָאֵל) is 541, One was often added for the presence of one God. There are 540° between the five angles of the pentagon.
The answer in one word to the question is “Balance”. This becomes bringing yang and yin together: Interacting 6 and 5. Ancient cultures knew this. Many, including Egypt and Israel, had and still have a long duration. I say, if it can help all of us today, why not?
