Ageless Teacher Pianist Mischa Kottler. Great men, like great wines, improve with age. Mischa, at the time of this picture was 88. He stayed active until age 94. What kept him going? Passion for the piano. As a teacher, he had a slew full of piano competition winners on his record. Even rock n’ roll benefited from his total mastery of the instrument. Gregory Arthur “Greg” Phillinganes (born May 12, 1956) is an American keyboardistsinger-songwriter, and musical director based in Los Angeles, California.   A prolific session musician, Phillinganes has contributed keyboard tracks to numerous albums. These included representing a broad array of artists and genres. He has toured with notable artists, such as Stevie WonderEric ClaptonDavid Gilmour and Toto, served as musical director for Michael Jackson, and has released two solo studio albums.

Primarily as result of having studied with my ageless teacher pianist Mischa, I too have had a successful and long lasting career. I’ve just begun my 10th year at the Gasparilla Inn on the isle of Boca Grande. There, I play piano for VIP’s from around the world. Tempus Fugit so Learn to Keep Yourself Young. Tempus fugit is a Latin phrase, usually translated into English as “time flies“. The expression comes from line 284 of book 3 of Virgil‘s Georgics,[1] where it appears as fugit inreparabile tempus: “it escapes, irretrievable time”. The phrase is used in both its Latin and English forms as a proverb that “time’s a-wasting”. Time seems to move at quick speeds. Tempus fugit also can translate: “Time is like a fugitive.” It’s a favorite to place on plaques that are mounted on grandfather clocks.

Tempus Fugit in Our Opera Octavian and Cleopatra

The upper featured picture has David Powers on the right. Joe Fast is on the left. They star in our opera: Octavian and Cleopatra. I, David Ohrenstein, wrote the music. My wife, Sharon Ohrenstein, wrote the book and lyrics.  David Powers plays the ghost of Julius Caesar. Joe Fast is the ghost of Marc Anthony. They try to communicate to Octavian. He must show Cleopatra that he loves her. Otherwise, she might do something drastic! Unfortunately, Octavian’s motto and the words he lives by is “make haste slowly.” This sets the wheels of tragedy in motion. The youtube sample is live from our production at the Palladium Theater. Cleopatra is  played by lyricist and book-writer, wife Sharon. She and the two ladies in waiting sing of their next lifetime. They receive instructions on  how to be high born from Cleopatra.

So, dramatically speaking we can always be young with reincarnation. However, my  book of poetry, is entitled The Oquaga Spirit Speaks. It offers a partial solution to aging. We can not ride the wave of time to avoid aging. Here is the spirit’s rhyme: “Keeping in motion is youth’s potion.”  It simply paraphrases Isaac Newton’s saying. George Friederic Handel Versus Sopranos. Handel was born in the same year as J.S. Bach. J.S. Bach avoided the operatic form. Handel did not. George Frideric (or Frederick) Handel (/ˈhændəl/;[a] born Georg Friedrich Händel,[b] German pronunciation: [ˈhɛndəl]; 23 February 1685 (O.S.) [(N.S.) 5 March] – 14 April 1759)[2][c] was a German, later British, baroque composer who spent the bulk of his career in London, becoming well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos.

Georege Friederic Handel had his first operatic job was  in his home town of Halle. There he played in the second violin section at the opera house near the  famed Goosemarket. At age 19 he tired of being in the second violin section. So, he switched from playing “second fiddle” to playing the “first” (and only)  harpsichord. He decided to write opera during the run of the Cleopatra by Johann Matheson. Matheson wanted to play the last part,  as usual, on the harpsichord by  himself, The was supposed to be during the very last scene. One night young Handel and Matheson got into a brawl  just before the last scene. Handel didn’t want to abandon the instrument. Their verbal and physical fight lasted a half-hour. Of course, the audience went wild over this major disagreement. After that experience, Handel decided to write his own operas. And, he did. He wrote some 46 in total.

My own favorite story about George Friederic Handel Versus Sopranos

Victor Borge has a number of soprano stories in My favorite Intermissions. A particular wild anecdote involves the Italian soprano, Francesca Cuzzoni. The George Friederic Handel opera she was to appear in was called Ottone.   Unfortunately, Francesca became inflamed: She thought Ottone did not show off her singing abilities to their fullest. Consequently, she refused to do the big number unless Handel let her improvise extra high notes.  How did it resolve? Georege Friederic Handel, in a burst of anger, hoisted her over a window ledge on the 2nd floor of the building. While dangling from the window, she decided Handel’s way wasn’t so bad after all. It’s regrettable that so much color is lost in music history classes at both high school and  university levels. These stories are necessary to perpetuate the art. Great composers were also real human beings. I think it’s time for a revival of great classical writers and their works. Such stories can help. More blogs will be posted on this topic. Cleopatra’s ladies in waiting give her a potion to calm her over the her grief  of the suicide of her husband, Marc Anthony.  In a drunken stupor, Cleopatra mistakes the Captain of the Roman guard for her former lover and husband. The ladies in waiting  gladly let this happen, hoping that the captain would fall in love with Cleopatra, and help them them to escape from Egypt. Wind Song Players in Concert under Maestro Edmond Demattia. Ed is the founder and conductor of a new musical group. They are called the Wind Song Players. The trio consists of:

  • Ed Demattia on the oboe.
  • David Ohrenstein on the piano.
  • Sharon Ohrenstein, vocals.

So, firstly, who is Ed Demattia? A Founder and President of the National Concert Band Association.

  • The idea for a “national concert band” began in 1973 with discussions among retired and former members of the four major military service bands in the Washington, DC area. The organization’s two main purposes were to provide a way for area military musicians to continue to play after retirement, and to preserve the  concert band tradition of music in the United States, so prominent in the first half of the twentieth century.It was during conductor DeMattia’s tenure the Band participated in making the epic series of historic recordings of “The Heritage of the March,” produced by Robert Hoe of Poughkeepsie, NY.
  • The first conductor chosen was Edmund DeMattia, formerly principal oboist with the United States Navy Band. He was one of the founding members of the American Concert Band Association (ACB) and the National Concert Band became a member of this professional organization.
  • Ed Demattia, founder of the Wind Song Players was 1st oboist with the United States Navy band
    Our oboist, Ed Demattia, was also the 1st oboist with the United States Navy band.

     

     

     

 

 

 

 

 

The concert will be both enjoyable and popular. Selections will include a medley of classic melodies from Lerner and Lowe musicals. With David and Ed, Sharon will premier a new psalm that she arranged just for the group. It is called Sing Unto God. The main  theme uses the haunting Brahms melody from the 1st movement of his 1st symphony. She will also sing Memory from the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical, Cats. David will play a solo waltz by Chopin. Ed will play oboe featuring the melodic To a Wild Rose by Edward MacDowell. His classical selections will include a Concerto by Corelli arranged for Oboe and Piano. I call oboe Ed, The Master. Piano Accompanying from Singers to Oboe Players. Talk about maximum contrast. A competent accompanist needs to be like a chameleon. Chameleons or chamaeleons (family Chamaeleonidae) are a distinctive and highly specialized clade of Old World lizards with 202 species described as of June 2015.[1] These species come in a range of colors, and many species have the ability to change color. Likewise, a good accompanist must have the ability to change styles like a chameleon changes color. This, of course, depends on who he’s accompanying. I have been fortunate to work with oboist Edmund DeMattia.  He is an incredible oboe player and conductor. He is also  into his 80’s. I have been receiving a wealth of much needed knowledge from him. Among his accomplishments:

Ed and I are rehearsing regularly for an upcoming concert. We will do well known and established works for oboe.  My wife,  Sharon Ohrenstein, will also sing. Much of our music is original. I write the music. Shes does the lyrics. However, I must mention, Ed will also be performing also be playing one of my original works. It is called the Iguana Farm. Audiences go wild over it.

Piano Accompanying for Singers

  • Singers need  more of a background accompaniment. It is essential that lyrics be heard. Use the soft pedal on the piano. When music is marked forte, bring it down to mezz0 piano. If something is marked mezzo piano, bring it down to pianissimo, etc.
  • When the singer is tacit in  a piano solo section, then release your soft pedal. Play it full out.

Piano Accompanying for Oboe Players

Ed tells me “I need a full sound.” There is no concert band with us. We do not have 50 players. You are the only one. Contrary to the singer,  when the music is marked mezzo forte, play it full forte. When it is full forte, play it doubly loud. The bass must always be strong and solid, even with syncopated passages in the treble. Without these directions, the music can easily turn to chaos.

I have been so fortunate to work with experienced older musicians. (1) Piano lessons with Mischa Kottler (2) Accompanist to world renowned violinist, David Rubinoff (3) Work with Edmund DeMattia. I’ve continually built on my Master of Music degree from Wayne State University. Since I myself am becoming older, I wish to keep the tradition going.  I offer piano lessons in Sarasota; but for those who are interested the possibility of a career. Learning Piano With Mischa Kottler Thanks to My Dad. This blog is in memory of my father. Much of the content will be in my eulogy for my father, Bernard Ohrenstein. He just passed away at age 97.  Dad was from Poland. He was a survivor from four years in the camps.

My father saw I had a flare for piano and composing. This was at age 11. He did everything possible to nurture that. I began composing as soon as we got the piano. He arranged for a solo concert of my eastern European flavored music at the local synagogue in Detroit. I was 12 years old when I played the concert.  Later that year wrote a musical play. He arranged for a presentation with renowned Detroit Mi  and Louisville Ky cantor,  Joseph Birnholtz.  I had been studying piano with a Mrs. Foster. At my 1st year recital I played the entire Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven from memory.

Dad then took me to the best, Mischa Kottler.  Mischa was  considered the finest teacher and prima piano player of Detroit. He headed the piano department at Wayne State University. He was the official pianist of the Detroit Symphony. He had his own radio program with WJR, On it, he played a different program every Sunday. My father paid for my college education and piano lessons with Mischa.

It gets better: When 1st accepted by Mischa, you were placed on a waiting list. Lessons could even be 2 months apart. So what did my father do?  Being a jeweler, he made a solid gold ring. He then sent the ring to Italy to finest craftsman. The head of Beethoven was carved  intaglio on a sardonyx stone.   Beethoven was set into the ring.  My father’s plan worked. I got regular piano lessons. Mischa wore the ring at every concert he gave. It was his pride and joy.  So what came of my learning piano with Mischa?
  • Even at my current age, I play six nights weekly at the Gasparilla Inn. There, I’ve entertained two American Presidents. Guests have also included members of the British House of Lords. I am currently completing my 8th year.
  • I married a wonderful book writer-lyricist, Sharon Ohrenstein. Together, we write and produce shows. Below are short youtube samples. They are from our newest show entitled, Golden Roads. Thanks to my dad (and mom, of course) I’ve had a wonderful life filled with love and music. My advise to parents with children: Do any of the following: Give them piano lessons. Charles Edward AndersonChuckBerry (October 18, 1926 – March 18, 2017) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter and one of the pioneers of rock and roll music. With songs such as “Maybellene” (1955), “Roll Over Beethoven” (1956), “Rock and Roll Music” (1957) and “Johnny B. Goode” (1958), Berry refined and developed rhythm and blues into the major elements that made rock and roll distinctive. The quote below is from NYT dated March 18, 2017:

Requiem for Rock and Roll

The following is an excerpt from the New Yorks Times.  This quote below is from NYT dated March 18, 2017. Jon Pareles, a music critic for The New York Times, reflects on the pioneering music and attitude of the rock legend Chuck Berry. ” While  Elvis Presley was rock’s first pop star and teenage heartthrob, Mr. Berry was its master theorist and conceptual genius, the songwriter who understood what the kids wanted before they knew themselves.”

As a teenager, I, David,  was ousted from Rock and Roll central. I had an interview at Motown with Marvin Gaye. At the time I was giving Motown’s attorney’s children piano lessons. My compositions have always been melodic to the “nth” degree. Rhythm was in. Melody was okay, but quite secondary. Bottom line: Times are now difficult. The public needs beautiful once more. Kind of like the early 1930’s. Think of “Stardust.” It was the leader song that gave the 20’s rhythm songs their requiem. Here’s what most people do not realize: Rock and roll has outlasted the entire era of classical music. The heyday of classical style was 1750 to 1800. That is 50 years. This included Mozart, Haydn and early Beethoven. Above is a  picture of Chuck Berry. It is dated 1957. That is 60 years ago. The only thing for sure is change.  I unhumbly state: “Watch for my music. I  intend to be at the forefront of the new style with new and beautiful music. This is not only as a piano player, but as a composer”.  My wife, Sharon Lesley Ohrenstein is the book writer and lyricist. Shortly, our new musical “Golden Roads” will be making an appearance. In this free youtube presentation Sharon is singing and being interviewed.  I am at the piano. In the meanwhile you can hear me play on vintage Steinways at the Gasparilla Inn on the exotic isle of Boca Grande. This is my 8th season. I’m under contract until April 16. Sneak Preview of Golden Roads, A new Musical.

Golden Roads, our one-woman musical about Golda Meir, premieres in less than 10 days at the SaraSolo Festival! Get a sneak preview and find out just how young David was when he started composing these melodies. Why is this production so special?

  • It is our 4th major rewrite of a show whose time is now. Its history goes back to 1990 at the then Jewish Community Center in Sarasota. Then it had a full cast of 25. Afterwards, it was included in the abbreviated version of three of our musicals, called Three Queens: They were (1) Elizabeth of Russia (2) Octavian and Cleopatra (3) Our Golda.
  • We placed the Golda musical on the back burner for 10 years because of the then touring “Golda’s Balcony.” Now after the recent election we brought it out again. Here is a musical about a woman who did rule her country. This was in spite of her having cancer at the time. She had to lead the country during a vicious attack on Israel. This was on the holiest of Jewish holidays- Yom Kippur.

The following about Carlo Thomas is an excerpt from Lynn Bernfield’s radio show. “He went on to a career which included Opera (City Opera, Canadian Opera, Berlin Opera, The Spoleto Music Festival, where he was directed by Gian Carlo Menotti), Broadway (1776, Phantom of the Opera), Concert (soloist at Radio City Music Hall), Recording with the Fred Waring band – and anything that required music. With his life partner Timothy Gray (who with Hugh Martin wrote the score for the musical High Spirits – based on the Noel Coward play Blithe Spirit, and many more), Carlo was enmeshed in the theater scene. Kind, wonderful and generous Carlo has been coming to our Sarasota home twice weekly. He introduced us to concepts that are now currently used in Broadway musicals: These are the use of musical motifs throughout the score. The motifs uniquely make the piano an active actor in the show. Now Golda and the piano have an active dialog. One example: When Golda goes to the kibbutz, the piano’s motif is “Old MacDonald had a Farm”. Everyone has enjoyed the piano’s part. The piano cleverly comments on almost everything. I could go on and on. But I won’t. Just come and see the grand premier. Seating is limited. The show is selling quite well.

The musical presents highlights from the early life of Golda Meir. The show has already been presented in other manners. For example, below is a scene is from an earlier production for 3 people. The venue was the Players Theater of Sarasota. For the Players, we had a small orchestra:

The Building of “Golden Roads” in Israel was an idea that came to fruition under the leadership of Golda. She was against pavement marking the landscape.  Instead, she insisted that roads should be beautiful.  Trees, flowers-  all were to be used for this purpose. The choice of this new title for the work replaces previously previous titles of “Our Golda” and “My Golda”.  The version we are doing for Hadassah  has shapes  the script into a one woman show.  It was first presented as such for the Jewish Genealogical Society of Southwest Florida  on  Sunday, May 15 2016 at he Kobernick House.

Roatan is the Place That Gave Rise to My Roatan Suite.

Here are a dozen  descriptive piano pieces that I wrote in the Summer of 2000. I was part of a theatrical troupe that toured the island. Wife, Sharon Ohrenstein, was one of the entertainers. We played at 3 different hotels.  It is located off of the coast of Honduras.on the Gulf of Mexico. One of my piano students inspired me compose “something that kids could play.” This exotic island was the perfect setting.

Story for each Selection of the Roatan Suite

  1. Roatan Rhumba: Offers a sense of the Latin rhythms and melodies heard the island by local bands.
  2. Island Dreams: For natives, the main avenue to  better life was being a “diving captain” for tourists. Pay was excellent. Another avenue was working on a ship.They all wished and aspired to improve their position.
  3. The Iguana Farm is a life altering experience. Hundreds of giant iguanas running around while a 5 year old was feeding them. Thank heavens iguanas are vegetarians.

     4.  Children on the Beach: Who can have more fun than children on the beach splashing and playing in the sand.

    5.   Crazy Taxis on the Island: There’s really nowhere to go but the drivers ride like every trip is an emergency. Their small cars usually stuffed atleast 10 to 15                       people.

    6.  Sunrise Worker With Machete: My wife and I were out early walking. What seemed like an  army came toward us with drawn machetes. We thought we were as              good as dead; however, they are very peaceful. Cutting grass on the mountain sides is how they make their living. In their other hand they held a large jug of                    water. My music suggests the swishing sound of their blades.

    7.  Sauntering on the West End. Wow! You haven’t experienced life until you’ve done this. It is a beautiful stretch of  art galleries by local artists, dining done right              on docked ships, fortune tellers, fun, fun, fun.,,etc

    8.  Fishng Fleet Expedition: A dozen large fishing ships left harbor in full gear. The island fishers provide fish to many American markets and major chains.

    9.  Deep Sea Diving: Natives and tourists relish the beautiful coral reefs and colorful aquatic life in the depths of the Gulf. There is an early morning dive and                         evening dive. Yes, they have whale sharks! They also are said to be vegetarians.

    10. Town of Coxen Hole: Coxen was the pirate that first landed on the island with his cutthroat crew. The “Hole” is a term for where the pirates would drink. They                didn’t drink milk! Roatan is famous for rum.

    11. Stroll on the Beach: Was written while my wife and I were strolling on the beach. The vista was  vast, peaceful and beautiful.

12. Shimmering Water on the Gulf: The waves of the ocean are depticted by the arpeggios that run up and down the piano keyboard. I think this piece would even                  offer any concert virtuoso a challenge. Below is a dolphin communicating the latest sea news to folks at the local station.
